The Deaf Ministry at the Church of the Nazarene in Toekomsrus, just outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, has been a beacon of hope and inclusion for the deaf community in the area. The church has long been committed to ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, feels welcome and included in the body of Christ. Over the years, this commitment has grown, resulting in a dedicated ministry that addresses the unique needs of the deaf members of the church. Context and Current Activities Currently, the Deaf Ministry comprises seven deaf adults who, though unemployed, contribute immensely to the life of the church. Their most recent contribution was through their volunteer work in the extension of the church building, a project that not only utilized their skills but also strengthened their sense of community. This space has become a sanctuary where they can communicate freely in their shared language, South African Sign Language (SASL), and support each other in a world that often excludes persons with disabilities.
Future Vision and Goals Looking ahead, the Deaf Ministry at the Church of the Nazarene has two primary goals.
-First, they aspire to host the next Deaf Rally at their church, an event that will require additional funding to accommodate attendees and provide necessary resources. This rally will be an opportunity to further strengthen the bonds within the deaf community and showcase the capabilities and talents of deaf individuals under the banner of "DEAF CAN! "
-Secondly, the ministry is eager to visit the Deaf Church in Swaziland. This visit aims to inspire and build a strong relationship with Jesus among the deaf in Swaziland, drawing on the experiences and faith journey of the Toekomsrus group. By sharing their testimony and ministry model, they hope to encourage and empower the Swazi deaf community to grow in their faith and communal strength.
