A Holistic Initiative for the Health and Well-being of Pastoral Families in South America
In South America, chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and various forms of cancer are silently rising, often going undiagnosed until they become life-threatening. According to the World Health Organization, early diagnosis can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the financial burden of treatment. For example, nearly 30% of cancer cases could be cured if detected and treated early.
This reality has a profound impact on those at the heart of our spiritual communities: pastors and missionaries. These leaders are the backbone of the Church of the Nazarene in South America, guiding over 322,000 members across 2,495 churches and 437 missions. With 2,038 ordained and 2,035 district-licensed ministers serving across 83 districts, the demands on their physical, emotional, and spiritual health are great. Yet many face serious barriers to healthcare, especially those who are immigrants, due to limited resources and access.
Recognizing this urgent need, the Support for Caregivers project was created as a compassionate and strategic response. Rooted in the belief that a healthy minister fosters a healthy church, this initiative is dedicated to strengthening the well-being of pastoral and missionary families through intentional, holistic care.
Project Goals:
Primary Healthcare Access:
Volunteer medical professionals offer free primary care services to pastors and their families.
Emotional and Mental Health Support:
Counseling and development workshops are provided specifically for pastors’ children, who often carry their own unseen burdens.
Rest and Renewal:
Strategic pastors’ retreats that will be organized in partnership with national church leadership. These retreats will offer opportunities for rest, reflection, and spiritual renewal.
Resource Development:
Creation of written and audiovisual materials to promote ongoing education and support for holistic health.
This project is more than a health initiative it is a ministry of care. By investing in the physical and emotional well-being of those who serve, we are also investing in the vitality, resilience, and testimony of the Church itself. The Support for Caregivers project offers a tangible expression of love and dignity for those who dedicate their lives to serving God’s people.
