The energy was high on campus this past semester as we welcomed both new and returning students for unrestricted full-time, in-person learning for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. It was easy to see that students embraced with new enthusiasm the supportive, transformative experience of Christian higher education at Ambrose.
However, this return to full classroom capacity revealed again our critical need for additional classroom space. Even before the pandemic, students experienced limitations on study and classroom availability. In particular, the introduction of a third cohort in the education program and the need for larger junior-level courses created a demand for classrooms with higher capacity than those currently available. (The larger classes now break into smaller sections, transferring the space crunch to other classrooms.)
The solution is to add classroom space. More specifically, we plan to add three classrooms for a total of 90 seats, as well as create a hub for the growing School of Business with six new offices for faculty and support staff, a large meeting room and a student lounge. Although we have explored other options—such as leasing space from the adjacent commercial center or purchasing an ATCO modular building—the most efficient way for us to attain the needed space is to invest in a new-build that we can configure to our exact specifications.
Following extensive work to identify a floor plan that gives us the square footage we require within an achievable budget and the time frame that we need, we developed a plan. We are excited to report that nearly 90% of the $1.75M in required funding has already been pledged by a small number of donors! Because we will not take on debt to fund this project, we are raising the additional funds so that we can begin work immediately and have the additional spaces ready for the 2023-2024 school year.
